Mastodon and mammoth bones, ancient fossils, giant shark teeth!
Florida was once entirely submerged in the sea and the remnants of sea creatures we find collected here are up to 50 million years old. Since then the water level has risen and fallen causing fossils to wash out into creeks and rivers. Because of that washing out it is common to find both sea creatures' and land animals' remains all in one place. While you may not find any dinosaur fossils here, there's always a chance you'll find the giant teeth of the Megalodon shark!
The most common fossils you will find in Gainesville belong to the Miocene Era, anywhere from 5 to 23 million years ago!
